Falmer

EASTER EXHIBITION: Well I have finally eaten all the chocolate eggs, but I must say it took some doing. Now I feel I don't even want to look at any chocolate until Christmas. Finishing the chocolate doesn't mean that Easter is over however, as we are in the Easter season for quite a few more weeks and our Easter exhibition will be up for the whole of that time. The Easter Fires exhibition has got off to a great start. People have been complimentary and have even recognised some of the people who modelled for one of the paintings. The show is on at weekends until May 2 (Bank Holiday Monday) so there is plenty of time to catch up. If you do make the trip, make sure you read the poetry that is an important part of the exhibition.

MUSIC: We have the chance to hear the stars of the future tomorrow, Saturday, as students from the East Sussex Academy of Music are playing for us at St Laurence Church as part of our concert series. Music will include: Harry Plant playing Alexander Artjunjan’s Concerto for Trumpet. Natasza Pomorska (soprano) and Amanda Buckland (piano) performing Schubert’s Lied der Mignon and Puccini’s O mio bambino caro. Katie Warren playing Brahms: Sonata for Clarinet Op.120 No 2 first movement Allegro amabile. Stephen Owen (piano) playing Beethoven: Sonata in C minor (Pathetique) first movement and Chopin: Nocturne in C sharp minor. Eleri Jones, soprano will be singing Bach: Esurientes implevit bonis from Magnificat amongst others. The young musicians will be accompanied by Nicholas Houghton. I think this is going to be a real treat.

MORE EXHIBITIONS: I have been busy contacting artists and makers about joining us here in Falmer for Artwave (which seems a long way off at the end of August) as we had to register now. I can promise you a great line-up again this year, with some new artists as well as old favourites.

BIRDLIFE: I still have nuthatches visiting our bird feeders, I hope this means that they are nesting somewhere in the garden. I have also seen long tailed tits collecting cobwebs and our faithful blue tits seem to be nesting under the eaves again this year. Things are also hotting up on the pond with a lot of frantic running around and gangs of drakes chasing the female ducks. I hope that our noisy little call ducks may deter some of the predators that so often take the eggs and young from the nests. It would be very nice to have ducklings on the pond again.
