FAMILIES EVACUATED FROM HOMES

TEN families were evacuated from their homes and 40 left without gas after a car hit a gas main in Buxted High Street this morning (Wednesday).

The call came through to emergency services at 6.45am.

Police and firefighters from Heathfield attended the scene.

Nearby roads were closed for about four hours and trains did not stop at Buxted station.

Buxted CEP School was also closed for the day.

A Southern Gas Network spokeswoman told the Express a gas governor station (a device that stands proud of the road and reduces gas pressure in the mains to the lower pressure needed for homes) had been hit.

As a precautionary measure supplies were turned off.
