Family Fun Day at the De La Warr

HUNDREDS of parents and children enjoyed a messy day at the De La Warr Pavilion on Thursday, in a Family Fun Day organised by Rother Children's Centre.

Under-fives queued for face painting and played with plasticine or stencils, taking time out to learn about healthy eating and movement.

The mini-beasts proved a popular attraction, with the brave taking the opportunity to touch a three inch cockroach, giant millipede, or brightly striped snake courtesy of ZooLab, an educational company leading hands-on creature workshops for schoolchildren.

Matthew Lee, 4, said: "You don't often hold a cockroach, it was tickly, and I want to get my face painted now."

Angela, his mother, said: "It's half term so this is a great day out for him. I'm ready for a cup of tea soon."

The event ran from 1-4pm. Entrance was free, as were most activities.

All money raised went to Friends of Sure Start, a voluntary social group formed in 2003.

As well as Active Fun Days, the Friends organise Health Walks and sports activities that complement the Rother Children's Centre programme.

Their next event is a quiz night on Friday, March 20 at Sidley Children's Centre, and other plans include a barn dance and children's talent competition.

A SureStart Children's Centre is located in Egerton Park. The Centres were set up nationally as service hubs for children under five in 1998.

Amongst other things, the Centres offer parenting support, family drop-ins and play groups, home visits, and help for parents to get back into work.
