A famous dairy farmer will be opening his farm to the public tomorrow (Saturday) for the best day of the farming year - Turnout Day.

Farmer Steve Hook, who starred in film The Moo Man, is selling tickets for people to come and witness the cows being released on to the field after a winter indoors.

He said it is a fantastic sight to see the herd playing and running about after being cooped up - and is a rare phenomenon as they only do it on the first day of being released.

Steve said: “Turnout Day is the best day in the year on a dairy farm.

“The milking herd have been housed indoors all winter, and can’t wait to be running around in a field full of luscious spring grass.

“However, they only run around and play on the Turnout Day, they don’t play on the next day, only that first day.

“It is a fantastic sight to see.

“Even the older cows run around like young calves.

“Come along to Longleys Farm, Harebeating Lane, off Battle Road in Hailsham, and have a great day out.”

The farm will be open from 10am onwards.

The cows will be turned out at 11.30am.

At midday, the main event, ‘Big Billy’ the four year old steer will also be turned out to join the cows.

Steve said: “He is big, weighing well over a tonne.

“He is quite a sight when he gets moving.

“Bring a picnic, relax in the meadow, sunshine hopefully to be confirmed, and let the cows entertain you for the day.

“Don’t miss out on this wonderful once a year event.

“It is a great day, and we hope ‘Turnout Day’ will become an annual event in Hailsham.”

Entry is free for children under five, £3 for five to 18 years old, and £10 for 18 year olds and older.
