Song choices represented in the final were Rio, The Power of Love, Radio Gaga, Livin’ on a Prayer, Every Breath, Don’t You Want Me and Don’t You (Forget About Me).

The tutor group 7CMK, with the support of their tutor, science teacher Charlotte Kendrick, was chosen as this year’s winners with their rendition of Livin’ on a Prayer, from the 2013 American computer animated film Free Birds.

Jo Clear, assistant head teacher at Church Street, said: “This was a wonderful community event where more than 300 students get to perform on a stage and in front of a large audience, along with lights and a fantastic live band. How often does that happen?

“The competition was excellent again this year with music teacher Dave Berliner bringing out the best in the groups with some very encouraging conducting.”

The choirs were all supported by Jon Reeves, learning leader for music, and a team of students giving some expert musical accompaniment.

Mrs Clear was joined by head teacher Nick Wergan, head of French Katie Brownings and four sixth formers on the judging panel.

They placed tutor group 7JLB in second place and 8YL in third.

Mr Wergan said: “It takes grit and zest to sing confidently in front of your peers, and we saw these learning characteristics in abundance.

“The students gave each other great support and we are proud to be a ‘singing’ school.”

The lower school has 420 students in key stage three – years seven and eight.

The annual choir competition involves all the lower school students, who compete as a choir in their tutor groups.

From these, the top choirs are then selected to compete in the final.

Students make their song choices and begin practising in their music lessons in early September.

Mrs Clear said they always really look forward to competing and being a part of the event.
