Farewell to Charlie Piggott

PEASMARSH is in mourning for one of its most well-known residents this week following the passing of Charlie Piggott on Sunday.

Charlie, who lived at Main Street, was a true Sussex countryman and a craftsman who could turn his hand to anything.

He was once commissioned to make a bishop’s crozier which was carried in a pilgrimage between Winchester and Canterbury. He hand carved the crozier from holly and ivy wood.

Charlie, who played whistle, also played a key role in forming a traditional village band and formed part of a band that entertained visitors on a tall-ship that moored at Rye’s Strand Quay.

He had a deep and extensive knowledge of the local countryside and could tell you the location of the best chestnut tree or where to find wild hops growing in hedgerows.

He was also a diligent churchwarden in the village.

Charlie’s funeral will take place at Peasmarsh Church at 2.30pm on Wednesday April 4.
