Farmer’s Market in running for top award

RYE Farmer’s Market has reached the finals of this year’s Sussex Food and Drinks awards.

The popular weekly market, held at Strand Quay, has been short-listed as one of six finalists and is up against farmer’s markets from Arundel, Chichester, Lewes, Shoreham and Steyning

The Sussex Farmers Market of the Year section is sponsored by Harveys Brewery and Joint Managing Director of Harveys Miles Jenner said: “The starting point for us had to be the range and quality of Sussex food and drink on offer in the market but beyond that we wanted to look at the contribution made to the local community, be it economic or social.

Our six finalists all provide a fantastic showcase for local produce, encourage links between rural and urban communities and provide an excellent place for friends and neighbours to meet or, in some cases, MP’s to mingle and stay in touch with their constituents.”

Rye Farmer’s Market was one of the first weekly markets in East Sussex, just behind Brede Farmer’s Market.

It was set up by Iden organic farmer Christopher Strangeways and offers a wide variety of locally produced food and drink.

Hilary Knight of the Sussex Food and Drink Network said: “Supporting local food and drink producers and suppliers is essential if we are to continue to enjoy the landscape and the beautiful scenery we have on our doorstep.” .
