Faster responses for mental health in West Sussex

PEOPLE with mental health problems are being seen, assessed and treated more quickly than ever before according to a new report.

The Sussex partnership NHS Foundation Trust ‘s board of directors have been told it is meeting all its priority targets, with urgent patients referred by GPs seen within four hours, while all non-urgent cases are seen within four weeks. Patients with psychosis are being seen much earlier after the onset of symptoms.

Sickness absence among staff is also continuing to fall from around five per cent in January to less than 3.5 per cent now.

Other targets achieved by the trust in May included seven-day follow-ups, pre-assessment of all inpatient admissions by the crisis teams, new cases of psychosis seen by early intervention teams and access to healthcare for people with a learning disability

The trust’s executive director of corporate services Sue Morris said: “It is easy to be overwhelmed by the number of indicators that measure how the NHS performs, but there are some that provide a very clear snapshot of how a foundation trust is doing at any point in time.

“I’m very pleased that Sussex Partnership continues to achieve targets across almost all the main priority performance indicators.”
