Fatal crash closes section of the M23 near Gatwick Airport

Police are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian died in a crash on the M23 near Gatwick Airport in the early hours of this morning.

Officers say that the crash happened at around 1am between junctions 8 and 9 and involved the pedestrian, a van and a lorry. The pedestrian died at the scene.

Highways England say that the southbound lane of the motorway near the airport is likely to remain closed all morning.

Police Sergeant Dan Pascoe said “The circumstances behind this collision are unclear at the moment so we are appealing to anyone who was driving along the M23 between 12.30am and 1.30am to get in touch if they have any useful dashcam footage.

A Highways England spokesman added: “Surrey Police investigation works are being carried out. The closure is likely to remain in place throughout this morning.

“Road users are advised to follow the hollow yellow diamond diversion symbol and exit the M25 at J6 (Godstone) onto the south bound carriageway of the A22 where it will continue until the junction with the A264 at Felbridge.

“Turn west onto the A264 and travel on this until J10 of the M23 where road users can resume their journey.”
