A PERSON is believed to have died after they were hit by a train in the Berwick area this morning, August 16.

The 06.49 Hastings to Victoria train struck a person between Polegate and Berwick Railway Stations around 7.50am.

Trains between Lewes and Eastbourne were cancelled at the time.

Lewes Railway Station was full of passengers taking rail replacement buses along the route.

A spokesman for Southern Rail said: “All lines were blocked and we were unable to run between Eastbourne and Lewes in both directions.

“British Transport Police attended the scene along with Network Rail staff.

“While the lines were blocked and the situation was being assessed, replacement buses were running between Eastbourne and Lewes.”

The all-clear was given at 9.25am and electricity supply restored.

The spokesman added: “We hope to have services running again shortly.”
