Father tells of drama as his son, 20, falls through Arctic ice

A FATHER has told of his traumatic experience when his son, who is on an expedition from the North to the South Pole, fell through the ice in Greenland.

David Gauntlett's son,Rob, spent three minutes in the icy water and was unconscious for half an hour after being dragged out.

Mr Gauntlett said that Rob, from Petworth, went through the ice on Saturday May 26 at around 2.45pm local time.

Mr Gauntlett said there was a four hour time difference and he heard the news back home at around 6.45pm.

He said: "It was a very traumatic evening for us. We were just walking out of the door to go out when the phone rang and it was the expedition manager to tell us the bad news that Rob had fallen through the ice and that he was unconscious."
