Felpham beauty spot set to get £10,000 redesign

A £10,000 grant will enable families to enjoy time down by the river in a Felpham beauty spot.

The maximum amount of backing available from the Awards for All lottery scheme will improve the river bank area in Longbrook Park.

Work on the project alongside the Aldingbourne Rife should start later this year when the initial design has been updated and confirmed.

The money is the largest single sum given to the Snooks Corner Community Group and is the culmination of at least two years' work.

Fred Parsons, the group's chairman, said: "When completed, the river bank will have a fenced path overlooking the rife with a circular viewing area with seating at the far end of the pathway.

"The bank will be landscaped and planted and will have protection for the wildlife. It will be a 'dog-free' zone."

The group has been working for several years with Longbrook's owner, Arun District Council's parks and openspaces department, to improve the seafront space which is a buffer between the built-up areas of Felpham and Bognor Regis.

The group's current name dates back nine years but its origins go back to the formation of the Snook's Corner Neighbourhood Watch group in 1992.

Its recent annual meeting was told by Mr Parsons the riverbank plans were just part of a wider improvement needed for Longbrook.

He stated: "An on-going problem is the irresponsible behaviour of some dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs.

"I have had many complaints about this and have referred the problem to Arun.

"A park like Mewsbrook in Littlehampton is a Green Flag park and has a site-based gardener, consequently dog mess is cleaned up on a daily basis.

"Longbrook Park, which is aspiring to be a Green Flag park, is too small to justify a gardener.

"However, why not the possibility of having a shared gardener together with Hotham Park? We need to think about such possibilities. The group seeks a higher standard of care and maintenance from the council, so we can achieve the Green Flag status for the park."

The seat surrounds would be improved by the end of this spring, he added. Progress was also being made on the group's ambitions of planting fruit trees on the park and having a boules pitch created.
