Felpham councillors say 'no' to Tesco store

Parish councillors in Felpham this week told Tesco: 'We don't want your latest store'.

Members of the council's planning committee agreed on Monday to strongly object to proposals for a Tesco Express outlet on Felpham Way.

The retailer wants to open the convenience store on the site of the Richmond Hyundai car showroom but local councillors made fierce protests against the scheme.

They said they feared the proposal would generate extra traffic movements on an already busy junction with Middleton Road to cause dangers to motorists and pedestrians. This would be worsened by the delivery lorries which would need to reach the store.

Another objection was the safety risk caused by the presence of the proposed store next to a children's play area with parents and youngsters crossing the store's entrance to reach the site.

The councillors also believed that Tesco's opening would have a significant impact on local businesses and nearby village centres. They considered it could lead to shops closing because of the loss of trade.

Six members of the public, including local business owners and sub post masters, attended the meeting.

The decision of the committee will be passed to Arun District Council where councillors will make the final decision in the coming months.
