Felpham organathon raises £4,500

Twelve hours of non-stop music raised more than £4,500 towards the cost of a new organ for Felpham Church.

Dr Alan Thurlow, the Chichester diocesan organ adviser, had recommended the existing instrument be replaced.

It had caused problems by regularly breaking down, usually before or during weddings or important services.

The Organathon began when James Rushman, the St Mary's Church director of music, started playing at 7am on Saturday and the first visitors arrived a few minutes later.

Guest performers included Philip Salt and Jeanette Fido. F

elpham head choir girl Charlotte McCarthy and May Phillips entertained the audience with a selection of songs.

For most of the day there were many people in the church listening and enjoying the refreshments that were available from 8am.

At 6pm evensong was sung by the church choir and one of St Mary's retired priests, Fr Bert Cooper.
