Felpham's young business brains win the day

Enterprising students from Felpham Community College have the best young business brains in the area.

The five-strong group gained the accolade by winning a Dragon's Den-style competition.

Joe Hawthorn, Ben Morris, Emma Fellows, Nick Song, all aged 15, and Alex Edwards, 14, battled against three rivals to win the approval of the judges to collect the winners' shield. They warned their opponents they wanted to come back next year to defend their title.

Alex said: "To be named the most enterprising school in the Arun district is really good."

Ben stated: "We learnt to work together as a team and gained new business ideas. We'd love to do it again next year."

The teams '“ who also came from Bognor Regis Community College, Angmering School and Littlehampton Community School '“ had their business skills tested by creating a removal company.

They had to devise an image for the firm. Felpham's was called Rapid Transport, and give a quote for a specified task with help from business mentors.

This all had to be explained in a presentation in front of the other teams and the judges '“ Richard Drake, the Barclays Bank local business manager in Bognor, and ALS Movers owner Andy McTaggart.

Bognor college's team was Hadley Ingham, Jamie McBurney, Aimee Goodsall and Elysia Hope, all aged 17.

Mr Drake said: "We have been very impressed with what you have done this morning. It has been nigh on impossible for us to come to a decision."

Mr McTaggart said: "There has been an enormous amount of energy, input and enthusiasm put in."

The competition, officially called the Arun Enterprise Challenge, was organised by Arun District Council with several partners. Each team will nominate a member to take part in a head-to-head contest during the summer to receive an individual award. Felpham's choice is Nick Song.
