Ferries on alert for terror lorry

SECURITY on Newhaven cross-Channel ferries was stepped up this week following warnings of a terrorist attack.

French and Dutch intelligence services advised last week that a lorry loaded with explosives would attempt to board a cross-Channel ferry to the UK. No specific port was identified.

Steve Forrest, operations manger for Transmanche Ferries, said security had been boosted on crossings of the Sardinia Vera and Dieppe ferries.

He said: 'We have increased checks and are being more vigilant. Searches are made of vehicle cabs and underneath vehicles with mirrors.'

However, Sussex Police said it had no evidence to suggest an attack was planned.

A spokesman told the Express. 'Despite the recent warnings from the French and Dutch authorities, and media speculation of a possible terrorist act against ferries, our assessment is that there is no credible information or intelligence in support of this threat.

'Threat levels to British maritime interests remain unchanged.'

He added: 'As has been said elsewhere, there is no need for panic or alarm - but there is a need for the public to remain vigilant to the threat of terrorism.'

A spokesman for Newhaven Port and Properties said it had received no new Government warnings to heighten port security.

The Government issued a statement on Tuesday stressing people should not change their travel plans.
