Ferry service faces axe

A SUMMER ferry service at Newhaven could be axed when a new route is introduced at Portsmouth.

The crossing to Le Havre, which operates once a day, will be withdrawn three weeks earlier than usual this year '“ and operator LD Lines does not know if it will be re-instated next year.

A spokesman said no decision had been made about the future of the service.

If the Seven Sisters ferry was withdrawn permanently, it would be used on the Newhaven to Dieppe route.

LD Lines has announced it will stop the Le Havre service on September 3 instead of September 27.

The spokesman said the reason for the change was the introduction of a Le Havre service from Portsmouth which will start in October.

He said: 'We decided to give us and Le Havre port time to prepare for the new boat's arrival.'

The Norman Voyager, which will operate on the new route, is under construction in Italy.

The Seven Sisters will resume her winter service between Newhaven and Dieppe on September 5.
