Festival fun

ALTHOUGH smaller than last year, hundreds of people lined the seafront on Monday to watch the 75th annual Worthing Rotary Carnival and Procession.

Around 21 floats and walking groups made up this year's procession, which snaked its way along the seafront from Marine Crescent to Steyne Gardens.

Ron Noakes, chair of the Rotary carnival committee, paid tribute to all who took part.

He said: "The support from the Worthing people is fantastic. We want to see people enjoying themselves and we want to make lots of money for local good causes. That's what it is all about at the end of the day.

"The time and effort that has gone into organising the floats always amazes me.

"It is now a well established tradition in the town. People look forward to it and come down to the seafront to get involved and watch. We hoped that the weather would hold out and we were lucky."

Winning floats included the 2nd Durrington Sea Scouts, whose float had a Jungle Book theme.

Youngsters dressed as tigers, monkeys and snakes and sang all the way along the route.

Other winners included Worthing Shopmobility with their Camelot-themed entry, as well as Splash FM and Worthing Thunder.

Other local groups taking part included Tori Tots, Worthing-based Penguin hockey club, Highdown District Brownies, and Celebration Samba.

Entertainment at the end of the route, in Steyne Gardens, included music from the Davison and Worthing Youth Concert Band as well as lots of different stalls.

The carnival princess was 12-year-old Jodie Hughes from Tarring.

She wore a blue ballgown and travelled along the route in an open-top car.
