Fete is looking rather closer to home

Organisers of Middleton's annual fete are breaking with tradition this year.

They are using Sunday's event to raise funds for the village hall rather than a good cause based elsewhere.

Fete committee chairwoman Joyce Weston says: 'After more than 25 years fundraising for various charities, the fete committee have agreed to move closer to home this year.

'The profits from this year's fete will be used to refurbish our own village hall.

'We all know how important it is to keep the village community alive.

'Upgrading our village hall will help to make it a nicer place to meet.'

The building was a focal point for a variety of clubs and organisations, she stated.

They included bingo, a range of dancing groups for all ages, bridge, organ music and painting.

Charities which have been helped by previous fetes include St Richard's cancer day care unit, Bognor War Memorial Hospital, Sussex Snowdrop Trust, and Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice.

The 2007 fete takes place this Sunday at Shrubbs Field.

The dog show provides the opening event at midday, with the rest of the attractions starting at 1pm.

A host of arena events will ensure plenty to keep visitors entertained until the raffle is drawn at 5pm to end proceedings.

The entertainment features singer Stacey Turner, two English civil war re-enactments, country dancing, a Punch and Judy show, a display by the Clubbin-it dance troupe and Egyptian dancing.
