Fight against landfill in West Sussex

A TWO-YEAR battle comes to a head next Tuesday when the county council's planning committee considers an application to turn Rock Common at Washington into another landfill site.

Veolia Environmental Services Landfill Ltd's plan proposes landfilling Rock Common with 7.3m cubic metres of domestic, commercial and industrial waste. This would make it the biggest landfill operation in the south of England.

If it succeeds, operations would begin in 2009/10. Landfilling would go on for 25 to 30 years and it would take another 60 years for the land mass to stabilise.

Members of Chanctonbury Landfill Action Group (Clag) and concerned residents will be staging a peaceful protest outside the entrance to County Hall in Chichester from 9.30am to 10.15am to demonstrate widespread opposition to the proposal. Clag is organising free travel by coach from Washington to County Hall and back. To reserve a place, call Pauline Stephenson on 01903 892824.
