Filling you in: the latest on potholes

MORE than 20,000 potholes have been filled across East Sussex and quite a few of those in Bexhill.

The Observer reported how potholes in roads such as Turkey Lane and Peartree Lane were causing problems for motorists and damage to vehicles but since then many appear to have been smoothed out.

Kenneth Cole of Cooden Drive called us to say: "If you go from Westcourt Drive down to Cooden Beach there are potholes all along there... lots of them. You can't count them there are so many, and they have been there a long time, since the beginning of the cold spell."

He was a couple of days later able to say the ESCC Highways team had started to fill in the patches on Cooden Drive.

Another satisfied customer was Annette Fearn of De Moleyns Close who had expressed concern at the danger for motorbikes.

She e-mailed to say the nearby pothole had been filled and said to the Highways Department: "I would like to take the opportunity in saying thank you very muchto your department for the very quick response in fixing the pot holes in both the roads I contacted you about."

East Sussex County Council says that progress has been achieved through routine inspection and in response to reports from members of the public.

Temporary repairs have been made so the holes could be fixed as quickly as possible to maintain safety on the roads.

A spokesman said: "We have also introduced a 'seek and fix' approach to repairing potholes, while doubling the number of teams working on the roads. 'Seek and fix' means the highways teams can make temporary repairs to as many potholes as possible in one area, in one visit, rather than waiting for them to be reported.

"Now winter is coming to an end, we will be starting a two-year 8.5m programme of resurfacing work across the county on all major roads. This programme will begin in April."
