Films from UK and abroad

A summer of film at The Electric in Guildford is the promise with the arrival of the Summer Film Festival from July 12 to 16 and from July 25 to 30 (tickets on 01483 444789).

“Enjoy two weeks of award-winning films from the UK, Spain, Australia, France, Mexico and the USA in a film festival that is sure to have something to suit all tastes,” said spokeswoman Caroline Bennett.

“Part one of the festival kicks off with Never Let Me Go starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. This poignant film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s best-selling novel follows the lives of three children on their journey to adulthood and to the haunting reality that awaits them.

“The seductive and beautifully animated Chico and Rita follows on Tuesday, July 13. With a score featuring music from jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, the story is as romantic as it is stylish. Best Foreign Language Oscar winner of 2010, The Secret In Their Eyes, starts part two of the festival on Monday, July 25. Expertly acted by Ricardo Darin, this dazzling romantic-thriller follows a retired legal counsellor as he writes his novel, attempting to reconcile past criminal cases, and past relationships.

“As well as stunning animation and gripping drama, the festival also features the hard-hitting documentary - Inside Job. Narrated by Matt Damon, Inside Job is considered the definitive screen investigation of the global economic crisis and is masterfully delivered.

“Finishing part two of the festival is the sublime French drama Of Gods And Men. Director Xavier Beauvois’s Cannes winner is a spellbinding story about courage and faith and a fascinating take on global extremism. Tender yet quietly terrifying, the film is based on the story of an Algerian monastery taken by Islamic fundamentalists in 1996.”
