Fine Floral Tribute

THOUSANDS of chrysanthemum heads adorn Arundel Cathedral's aisle for the traditional Corpus Christi carpet of flowers.

Corpus Christi is celebrated 60 days after Easter and has become a very special event in the town.

This year, an appropriate Golden Jubilee tribute to Queen Elizabeth II can be seen in the centre of the carpet.

"King of kings, lord of all" is written at either end of the aisle in flame orange, with yellow and gold flowers arranged in the shapes of an orb and sceptre. EIIR 1952-2002 can be seen in the very middle.

About 160 bunches of flowers were used for this year's carpet and the flower heads are arranged on a bed of flat pine fronds.

One of the dedicated team of decorators, Kathy Harrison, took a break from her work on Tuesday, and told us: "Twelve of us started at about nine o'clock this morning there's the same amount of people again, needed to get flowers ready. They are more important than us, really!"
