A spokesman said: “We were called at 10.10am to Lewes Prison following reports of a small fire in a cell.

“We have a fire engine from Lewes and and a fire engine from Brighton on scene.”

Lewes Prison said the small fire was put out before the fire service arrived.

It said there was no major damage and no staff or prisoners were injured.
