Fire crews called to store as burning smell detected

Fire crews were called to tackle a smell of burning at a Barnham store last Saturday.

The firefighters from Bognor Regis and Chichester attended the incident at the Co-op Welcome branch in The Square.

They used a thermal imaging camera to trace the smell to a commercial refrigeration unit.

The electricity supply was isolated and a hose used to cool the area.

A fan was brought in to remove the smell from the premises.

The fire crews were at the scene for about 45 minutes after the alarm was raised at 6.48pm.

l Firefighters had been called to a vehicle set on fire a few metres away earlier on Saturday.

A flat bed van was destroyed in the blaze outside the Barnham Hotel on Barnham Road.

A small portion of the building '“ 10 per cent '“ was damaged by heat from the flames.

The van was set on fire at about 1.30am.

The ten firefighters from Bognor and Chichester involved in tackling the blaze stayed at the scene for 40 minutes.
