Fire crews warn of dangers of unattended bonfires

FIREFIGHTERS are warning members of the public to be careful not to leave bonfires unattended following the recent spell of dry weather.

The reminder comes after Battle firefighters were called out to Robertsbridge on Tuesday evening following reports two bonfires were starting to spread.

The crew arrived at the Rother Valley Railway site just after 5.15pm to find the flames were starting to spread along the ground and had scorched overhanging trees.

The flames were extinguished and firefighters offered words of advice on bonfire safety.

Crew manager Dan Burnett, who is based at Battle Fire Station, said: “In this dry weather you have got to be careful bonfires do not spread.

“There’s lots of foliage around.

“Anyone who does have a bonfire in this weather should not leave it unattended and have a bucket of water and a hosepipe nearby in case it does get out of control.”

Crew manager Burnett added that anyone lighting a bonfire should be careful to site it away from fences, sheds, foliage and anything else which could catch alight.
