Fire in high-rise flat block in Whitehawk

Firefighters are at the scene of a fire in a high-rise building in Whitehawk.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to reports of smoke coming from a block of flats on Albourne Close at 12.31pm today (September 21).Six fire engines were sent to the incident along with an aerial ladder platform.The fire service said the blaze was on the eighth floor of the nine-storey building.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Crews are now damping down and 'turning over' to ensure the fire is out."Everyone is accounted for."

Fire crews remain at the scene.

The fire service also released safety advice to prevent fires in residential buildings:

- We encourage people to take preventative measures and to do a bedtime check.

- Make sure you check the cooker is turned off and turn off and unplug electrical appliances.

- Put candles and cigarettes out properly, ensuring there are no embers still burning.

- Please turn heaters off and put up fireguards if needed.

- Exits should be kept clear and you should close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading.
