Fire on vessel off Bexhill

A 29,000 ton car carrier reported a fire off Bexhill to coastguards on Friday morning (April 4).

Firefighters were airlifted onto the Liberian registered Oriental Highway, which was carrying 700 VW and Audi vehicles, after the call at 10.24am.

It took over six hours to get the blaze under control over 11 miles south of Hastings with the Lifeboat crew standing by.

No one was hurt in the fire and the vessel was then taken to Eastbourne.
