Fire service attended collisions and floods over the weekend

THE fire service have had a busy few days as they after being called to several crashes and flooded properties in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas.

On Friday evening (February 8), West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to a large bonfire in the garden of a home in Town Cross Avenue, Bognor. The fire was extinguished by Bognor fire crews.

On Saturday (February 9), the service were called to Sandy Lane, in Midhurst, when there was a small fire caused by an oven.

Midhurst firefighters turned up at 6.30pm, and removed the oven from the house.

A car collided with a tree and a man was taken to hospital yesterday (February 10). Chichester and Bognor firefighters turned up just after 2pm, and had to rescue the man from the car just before 2pm. An ambulance turned up soon after to take him to hospital.

Just hours later, there was a collision between two cars between the A27 and B2145 roundabout at Hunston. One car ended up in a ditch and one car on the road. Two people were trapped in one of the cars and had to be rescued by fire crews. They were later taken to hospital by ambulance.

At 8am this morning (February 11), a van ended up in a ditch in Eartham, and fire crews retrieved the vehicle. No one was injured in the incident.

The district has had its fair share of flooding too.

Yesterday evening, West Sussex Fire and Rescue service were called to Temple Bar in Strettington, near Tangmere, at 6.30pm. Water from surrounding fields was threatening several properties, so Chichester firefighters pumped flood water away from the properties, and left the scene at 8.10pm.

They then went to Appledram Lane, near Fishbourne, when a number of houses were in danger of flooding. Efforts were made to stem flooding using sandbags.

At 8pm, Bognor fire crews went to Nyton Road, in Westergate, where again water was threatening homes, and sandbags were used to protect the properties.

Just before 10pm, fire crews from Emsworth and Havant attended Lumley Terrace, in Emsworth, as five terraced houses were threatened by flooding.

Water was pumped and sandbags were put in place. They left the scene just after midnight, and advice was given to the residents.

Sussex Police dealt with several incidents this weekend too, including a 94-year-old sustaining serious injuries after a collision with a car here, and an 82-year-old motorist rescued from the mud after taking a diversion from a flooded A27 here.
