Fire Service talksabout A21 danger

Firefighters from Battle have been playing an active role in the raising the awareness of motorists to traffic dangers on the A21.

Recent figures have show that A21 remains the most dangerous trunk road in the country in terms of accidents where people have been killed or seriously injured.

The awareness campaign comes as East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service supports Brake’s Road Safety Week - the UK’s biggest road safety event.

On Monday 17 November, crews were at John’s Cross talking to people at the Route 1066 Café on the A21. Drivers were encouraged to fill in a questionnaire which will help form future campaigns to make roads safer.

And on Saturday they turned their attention to the stretch of the road near Blackbrooks Garden Centre, at Sedlescombe.

Rother Borough Commander Paul Evans said:“The A21 has recently been in the headlines because the Road Safety Foundation named it the most dangerous road in Britain.

“We are working hard to try to understand how we can help keep people safe.

“Far too often, we have to deal with the consequences of poor decision making or drivers being distracted.

“It has been very valuable to speak to people face to face and understand their concerns or worries – and to remind them of the importance of paying attention and slowing down while behind the wheel.”

Battle firefighter Dan Burnett said: “We also wanted to make people aware of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.”
