Firefighter died in East Grinstead ice crash

THE man who died following a head-on collision in icy conditions near East Grinstead in the early hours of Saturday morning as been named as firefighter Christopher Daniel Livesey, aged 33.

Sussex Police said he died at the scene of the crash in Top Road, Sharpthorne, at about 0015 GMT, when his Focus was in collision with a BMW.

A female passenger, aged 26, in the Focus and the male driver of a BMW were taken to the New East Surrey Hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to the incident, in which the Focus is believe to have hit black ice as temperatures plunged below zero, to contact them.

Top Road was closed temporarily while Sussex Police carried out an investigation.

Mr Livesey was a retained firefighter for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service based at Forest Row fire station.
