East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews carried out an exercise on May 19, simulating the rescue of a person trapped in mud.

A dummy was buried in the mud, and a ladder carefully moved into place to reach it. One crew member used a ladder to crawl to reach the ‘casualty’ before an inflatable rescue path was then used to reach them.

The exercise comes as East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service urges the public to enjoy a safer summer.

A spokesperson for ESFRS said: “If you are walking along our coastline, please take care.

“Look out for warning signs and make sure you have a way of raising the alarm.

“If you see someone in trouble - call 999 immediately.

“Make sure you enjoy a Safer Summer and read up on our advice www.esfrs.org/your-safety/safer-summer/”
