Firefighters offer advice

South Downs Nurseries in Hassocks had a visit from the fire brigade, but this was no emergency, just a drop-in advice centre as part of their annual Summer Drink Driving and Texting campaign.

Customers took part in a quiz, and four firefighters from the Burgess Hill Fire and Rescue Service were on hand to dispel common myths and educate on the laws and guidelines for drinking, driving and using a mobile phone at the wheel. They also gave out a wealth of advice and literature regarding fire safety in the home, the highway code for young people, cyclist safety and car safety for babies, toddlers and expectant mothers. Children and adults posed for photos with the fire fighters and were even allowed to sit in the fire engine and try out some of the equipment.

Fire Station Manager Mark Ross was pleased with the response from both the garden centre and the customers: “We’re delighted to be here today as it’s a brilliant opportunity to meet the residents of the local area and help to educate everyone about the importance of road safety during the summer.”

Garden Centre Retail Manager Simon Rennie was delighted to see the response: “The fire brigade are heroes in any local community, so it’s a great opportunity to have ours here with us today. The guys are very approachable and are doing a great job with the campaign.” Karla from the Burgess Hill Triangle also came to help with the quiz and campaign, offering a family swimming pass to the winner of the prize draw of completed quizzes.
