Firemen’s Fete hit by callout

VILLAGERS stepped into the breach at the big annual Firefighter’s Fete on Brede Recreation Ground on Sunday when firemen who were organising it had to attend a major five.

The Broad Oak fire appliance was called to Warrior Square, St Leonards, where fire had broken out in an old people’s home.

More than 50 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze, in which elderly residents were safely evacuated.

Chris Sands, from the Broad Oak station, said: “It is the first time that has happened. In fact we had two call-outs after that.

“People were amazing and stepped in to man stalls which would usually be manned by us. They did a great job.

Even visiting firefighters from other areas stepped in to help us out.

“The event was still a big success. Money raised from it will be shared between the Firefighter’s Charity and local good causes.”
