The annual bonfire night celebration is popular with families and usually attracts a large crowd.

Professional fire dancers will perform on the ground, the pyrotechnic show in the sky will be choreographed in time to music, and refreshments on sale will include mulled wine and beer, burgers and hot dogs.

The event is held at St John the Baptist CE School, in School Hill, but it is not just pupils and parents who attend. Last year’s spectacle attracted people from the village, Findon Valley and the surrounding area, as the fireworks event has a reputation for being one of the most impressive in the area.

Richard Yelland, head teacher, said: “Many schools have stopped hosting fireworks nights, which is a shame.

“We believe that this is an important family tradition, which is not only fun for people of all ages, but which also has important historical origins.

“As adults, most of us have seen a fair few fireworks in our time but it’s important to remember that for every new generation, it’s a new experience.

“It is wonderful to see the expressions on children’s faces as they see how the sky lights up with sounds and colours, and it makes for a memorable family evening out.”

Gates open at 6pm and the bonfire will be lit at 6.15pm. There will be performances by a fire dancer at 6.30pm, followed by the fireworks to music at 7pm.

Tickets are available on the night for £5 adults, £3 children (pre-school children free). They can also be purchased from Findon Village Post Office, in Horsham Road; Curtis Estate Agents, in Findon Road; Peckhams Butchers, in The Square; and Julia’s Kitchen, in Nepcote Parade. All proceeds go towards the school.
