Firm ‘rises from the ashes’ to net award

A LONG-ESTABLISHED Rye company has won a national award a few years after being devastated by fire.

Martyn Channon’s Country Store went up in flames four years ago after arsonists torched waste bins next to it.

It was the biggest fire in central Rye for many years and left the building, in the market area, completely gutted.

Now the business has been named winner of the 2010 Over the Counter Awards for its excellent service.

Spokesperson Katherine Openshaw said: “The awards recognise excellence and individuals and companies that stand head and shoulders above their competitors, who go the extra mile, who can act as ambassadors for the industry in driving forward standards of customer service and advice.

“The standard and number of entries were impressive to say the least, with the entrants being more professional in their skill set and offering to customers.

“The judges, comprised of industry peers, were pleased to see ongoing commitment to training as well as an appreciation that entrants understand the value of keeping up to date in their knowledge.

“This independent store in Rye is well run, based in modern premises and owned by Martyn Channon, who has been serving on the Animal Health Distributors Council since the mid 1980s as a member, chairman and president.

“But what makes the store stand out is the dedication to customer service and advice.

“Martyn, along with his son and store manager Patrick, have invested heavily in training staff to the R-SQP qualification.

“The result is five qualified staff available seven days a week allowing each one to give the right time and commitment to every customer without having to hurry through advice or forego a friendly chat.”

A delighted Martyn Channon said: “Patrick, my eldest son, and I were very proud for all our long- serving and hard-working staff who have put their animal health training to such good effect.”
