Firm takes '˜prompt action' following rife oil spill

Yeomans Nissan, based in the business park on Shripney Road, were advised some weeks ago that evidence of waste oil had been identified, and engaged the services of environmental spill experts Adler and Allen to ascertain the cause and extent of the problem.

They discovered that the concrete bund surrounding the waste oil tank, which was constructed before they took occupation of the building, was not entirely secure and that it had allowed a modest amount of oil to seep into the ground below the tank.

Following concerns raised by a local resident, this week the firm’s group operations director Kevin Newitt told the Observer: “The tank was unfortunately located directly above a storm water drainage pipe that discharges into the rife, and some waste oil had entered the drain via a crack underground in the pipe.

“Adler and Allen were instructed to take whatever action was necessary to remove all traces of contamination, both from the ground surrounding the pipe and from the rife, a process that they have been engaged in since we employed them.

“They will continue to monitor the drain over coming weeks and months to ensure that all of the oil residue has been removed.

“Yeomans are a local family-owned and run business that takes its waste disposal responsibilities extremely seriously, spending a six figure sum every year on the environmentally-friendly disposal of waste oil, tyres, batteries etc.

“With this in mind we are very disappointed that the spill occurred, but we took prompt and decisive action in partnership with the Environment Agency to rectify the issue at the earliest opportunity and we are confident that as a result there will be no lasting damage caused to the rife or the local area.”
