First Disability Pride event held in Brighton

The event, made possible by National Lottery funding, was a celebration of the disabled community, with a day of performances including live music, arts, comedy, street food and information stalls.

It was held on the same day as Disability Pride New York City and Disability Pride Italia.

Disability Pride Brighton received £10,000 of National Lottery funding from the Big Lottery Fund. It was organised by local mum, Jenny Skelton, whose daughter Charlie suffered disability discrimination during the weekend of Brighton Pride 2016. Jenny worked with local voluntary groups to bring the community together in a show of support for people with disabilities.

Jenny, chair of Disability Pride Brighton, said: “I have met some wonderful people who helped me to plan Disability Pride Brighton, most of whom identify as having disabilities. My life has been enriched by this whole journey and I am really proud of what we have created with National Lottery funding. I am delighted that so many people could join us in taking a massive step towards completely eradicating disability discrimination.”

The event’s performers included Daniel Wakeford (star of The Undateables), Zombie Crash, Unified Rhythm, The AutistiX, The Will Johns Band, Paper Dragon and Sam Hughes (the youngest Elton John Tribute act in the country).

James Harcourt, grant making director at the Big Lottery Fund, said, “It’s brilliant to see National Lottery funding bringing people in Brighton and Hove together to show support and celebrate diversity. Thanks to National Lottery players, Jenny was able to put together a great event for the whole community to enjoy.”
