The first one happened between December 5 and 6 on East End Lane in Ditchling. The second break in happened during the day on December 7 at a house on West Street.

Both burglaries had jewellery taken. However a lot of the items such as antiques passed down in the families have sentimental value, like a clock taken from the house in East End Lane and book ends and a first edition Rudyard Kipling book taken from West Street.

Also stolen from the address in West Street were a Gurkha kukri and an ornamental knife.

Detective Constable Costin Bonnell said: “These break-ins happened 24 hour apart and we are appealing to anyone who was in the village and may have seen anything suspicious. Some of these items are irreplaceable and have huge sentimental value. If anyone has any information please contact police on [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 399 of 06/12.”
