Five arrested near burglary scene

FIVE people were arrested near the scene of a suspected distraction burglary in Catsfield at the weekend.

A member of the public spotted a suspicious white van at The Green at 1.15pm on Saturday and contacted the police.

Officers arrived on the scene and discovered the occupants of the van had been into the home of an elderly lady, who had been the victim of an attempted burglary.

A woman, a male youth and a female youth, all from Netherfield, a man from East Hoathly and a man from Eastbourne were arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary.

They were later questioned by detectives and released on police bail.

Forensic officers are continuing to examine the scene.

Sergeant Dan Russell, of Battle police, said: “Due to the information and vigilance of a witness, police were able to go to the area and stop the suspicious group and after some enquiries it was believed they had committed a recent burglary in the area.

“My team are working with the victim to reassure her and other residents in the area.”
