Flag raised in honour of Merchant Navy seafarers

A CEREMONY to honour Merchant Navy seafarers took place at Worthing Town Hall today.

Adur and Worthing Councils supported a nationwide call from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association for the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs on Merchant Navy Day.

Worthing Mayor Michael Donin, mayoress Linda Williams, Adur District Council chairman Carson Albury and representatives from the National Ex-Services Association, Women’s Royal Army Corp, Royal Naval Association, Royal Engineers Association and Royal Naval Association watched on as the Red Ensign flag was raised.

Councillor Albury took a moment to honour his father Lloyd Albury, a former Merchant Ship Captain, who during the Second World War was active in keeping essential supplies distributed to all of the islands that make up the Bahamas.

The charity’s president, HRH The Earl of Wessex, urged people to support the day.
