Flamenco at the village hall

A TASTE of Spain comes to Five Ash Down, near Uckfield, every Saturday when, to the sound of the Spanish guitar, flamenco lessons commence.

The best of the summer may be over but there is still a holiday feeling in the village each week when the class gets together to learn the traditional Spanish dance.

The group formed in June when local resident Regina Manso de Zuniga who gets her exotic name from Madrid-based parents, contacted dance teacher Helena Benge in response to an ad for dance lessons held further afield.

Regina said: I saw Helena s adverts but wanted classes more locally. I talked to her and she decided she would come and teach us here in Five Ash Down.

Class instructor Helena has been dancing for over 25 years. She has studied flamenco in Spain and researched the origins of the dance extensively.

As well as teaching various classes throughout the south she runs the Duende Flamenco Store in Worthing and is a performer with the Duende Flamenco Company.

The classes held every Saturday from 12.30 to 1.30 are even accompanied by a live Spanish guitarist to get the real feel of Spain.

We performed at the Civic Centre as part of the Uckfield Festival s Big Band Night at the end of July which went really well, said Regina.

Flamenco is a fun way to exercise and keep fit and we would dearly welcome some new members to our classes.
