100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 12th January 1917. Permanent Whitewash. The suggestion that information should be obtained from London public authorities as to the ingredients of a whitewash mixture which would withstand the weather for a considerable period and enable pedestrians to distinguish kerbs in the darkness was made at the monthly meeting of Uckfield District, which was held on Friday evening.

The chairman remarked that kerbs in the town had been whitewashed but the surveyor reported that the work, which was carried out, was not satisfactory for long because rain interfered with it.

Mr Chilton expressed the opinion that money would be wasted by repeating the whitewashing on the lines on which it had been started. He indicated that anything which might be done in the direction of whitewashing would be unsatisfactory unless the council could obtain for the purpose a mixture which was likely to resist the weather for a reasonable period. London authorities were using a mixture, which met the special requirements, and endeavours should be made to ascertain what the ingredients were.

It was understood that the surveyor would deal with the matter.
