HARVEST THANKSGIVING: This special family service is on Sunday at 10.30am. (Please note later time). The plough will be carried up as is traditional. Farmers, Fletching Scouts and the Sunday club will be at the service. All children are invited to bring gifts of Harvest Produce (fresh or in packets, tins or jars etc). Produce will later be taken to the Uckfield Food Bank. The collection from the service will be sent to Farm Africa and the Prince of Wales Countryside Fund. Everyone welcome.

CHROMATICS CHOIR: The choir meet on Monday at 7.45pm.

FLETCHING SINGERS: The singers meet on Tuesday at 7.45pm.

MARTIAL ARTS: Kobudo Martial Arts meet on Thursday at 5pm.

BINGO: Bonfire Society Bingo is on Saturday October 8 at 7.30pm.

BONFIRE CELEBRATIONS: This year’s celebrations are on Saturday October 22. This year we will be returning to a full torch lit procession but we are starting a lot earlier. Please see details below. As always we need help. If anyone is free on Sunday October 16 to help with bonfire building then please be up Parsonage Farm at 10am. We also need donations of cakes and sandwiches so if you are able to help then please contact me on 01273 476360 or 07591993051.

Most importantly we need help on Sunday morning (October 23) to help clear the street and also the firework field, so if anyone can help with this then please meet us at the Village Hall at 9am.

Please make sure that all vehicles are removed from the High Street by 5pm. There will be parking at Church Farm, available from 5.30pm to 7.45pm. Also please note that the road closure this year will be from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. Roads will be closed at Splaynes Green, Mill Lane, and Rushton Bridge Road.

Procession timings and details. 6pm procession gathers at Church Corner; 6.15pm procession leaves Church Corner, up High Street, to Splaynes Green, turns and returns to Church Corner; 7pm interval; 7.45pm procession gathers at Church Corner; 8pm procession leaves Church Corner and walks down to Brewers Row, turns and returns. A tribute will be made to Terry Baldwin, who sadly passed away this year. Procession will then process to the bonfire field. 9pm firework display. All timings are approximate and subject to change. Last but not least I would ask that you give generously this year to the collection at the firework field, as we are down in fund raising this year and if we do not get enough money then we will have to scale down the fireworks next year. I hope that you all come out and support us in the evening and have a great time.

Bingo is back on Saturday October 8; there is a Fashion Show on Friday December 2. (Sarah Bradford).

100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 6 October 1916. Second Lieutenant Oswald Hood, Royal Sussex Regiment, who, as already announced, was killed on September 1, was the youngest son of the Rev E P Hood and Mrs Hood, of Fletching Vicarage. He was educated at Ancaster House, Bexhill, and at Wren’s (Army and Civil Service Coach). He entered the Imperial Chinese Customs but having resigned his position, proceeded to Australia. On the outbreak of the war he returned to England, and having joined the Artists’ Rifles, was gazetted on November 1, 1915, to the Royal Sussex Regiment. Lieutenant Hood took part in the suppression of the rebellion in Ireland, and was ordered out to the front in July 1916. His commanding officer writes concerning him: ‘He was greatly respected in this battalion, and his loss will be most keenly felt.’
