100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 29 September 1916. The Light Went Out. James Avis was summoned for not properly obscuring lights at his residence at Fletching at 1.55am on September 17. Defendant did not appear and was represented by Mr E M Rollinson, who admitted the offence. PC F Lusted of Fletching, said that the light was at Church Farm Cottages and he saw it half a mile away. On going to the house and knocking the light was at once put out. The windows were unscreened. Mr Rollinson explained that the defendant had occasion to light a candle during the night and as he always slept with his windows open he inadvertently forgot to obscure the light. Fined 10s.
