100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 8th September 1916. When a short time ago Mr W Eade, junr., of Bell Farm, Uckfield, in order to beat the weather and secure a field of hay in good order, took advantage of a fine Sunday to do so, he had the assistance of a large number of residents as well as of soldiers. A few were scandalized by the fact that a farmer should dare to work horses and men on a Sunday, but were possibly unmindful of the Biblical ox in the ditch. All the time it is necessary for our men to fight and die on Sundays in our defence, it will be necessary for those at home to lose no opportunity of increasing supplies.

(The Biblical reference is to Luke 14.5: And answered them, saying, ‘Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?’)
