100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 28 July 1916. Panels for Westminster Cathedral. In support of his claim for exemption, Arthur E R Gill, Ditchling, said he was a sculptor, and was engaged in producing panels representing the Crucifixion and the death of Jesus Christ for Westminster Cathedral. He was also working on a cross for a village in Dorset. The work was of national importance and the public interest, and depended on his own hand for completion. His two assistants had joined the Army. Conditional exemption was granted.
