FLETCHING FESTIVAL: Saturday July 16. Here are some of the exciting things you can see and do: Birds of prey, bouncy castles, Punch and Judy, art exhibitions, face painting, family magic show, Casino Classic Cars, Morris dancing, tractor rides, clay pigeon shooting, archery, hook a duck, splat the rat, coconut shy, welly throwing, golf chipping and tombola. The festivities start at midday when our MP Nusrat Ghani will open the festival in the High Street, along with our Town Crier. The Soap Box Derby will start, followed by Morris Dancing. Then there are activities and attractions on the recreation ground and in the church from 2pm until 5pm. This is followed by a party in the High Street from 6pm onwards, with a casino and bar in the village hall. We hope to see you there. We are still looking for more volunteers to help out on the day, even if it’s only for half an hour. Please get in touch if you can help in any way, thank you. For more information, please contact Katherine Rumble on 01444 483080 or e-mail [email protected]. Competition entry forms are now available online at www.fletching-pc.org and in Mr T’s Village Shop.

FORGET-ME-NOTS: Fletching Forget-me-nots are doing the tombola for the festival. We are asking for donations of prizes for the tombola stand please. Anyone who wishes to donate can bring contributions on the day or drop them off in the shop for Barry to collect, or bring them to my house, 14a Cherry Cottages. We are doing a table for children, and a table for adults, so a mixture would be appreciated. Many thanks, Lesley Dickens

100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 14 July 1916. Fletching Sewerage. The Sanitary Surveyor (Mr J Taylor) reported that he was submitting Mr Lucas’s annual account amounting to £5 5s for flushing the sewers in Fletching village and that he had visited Fletching when he found the syphons working satisfactorily.

JUNE RAINFALL IN PILTDOWN: The total precipitation of 151mm, or almost 6 inches, was the highest I have recorded over the past 18 years. It is three times the long-term average of 49mm. Last year we had only 23mm in the whole of June, a total exceeded by the 35mm which fell overnight on June 22 and 23 and 29mm for June 11 and 12.
