100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 2 June 1916. Uckfield Fire Alarms. The first serious test of the fire alarms which a short time ago were installed in the houses of the men who form the Uckfield Volunteer Fire Brigade took place early on Tuesday morning, when the Brigade was summoned to Maresfield Camp. The alarms consist of electric bells, which are set in motion from outside of the house, and proved very successful in saving time in summoning the fireman. At 5.30am a call was received, and 25 minutes later the engine was on the scene, which is about 2 ½ miles distant.

An interesting episode of the call was that when one of the fireman went to the stable to get the horses one of them, on being loosed, got away from him, and proceeded at once to the Fire Station, where it was, with its companion, speedily harnessed.
