100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 14 January 1916. Discovery at Piltdown. Last Friday a man was found dead by the side of the road on Piltdown Common, and the circumstances attending his death were the subject of an enquiry by the Coroner for East Sussex (Mr G Vere Benson), on Tuesday afternoon. The inquest was held at the Golf Club House and Mr G Varnham was chosen foreman of the jury. It was stated that deceased was Edward Hall, aged 76, and that he was an old age pensioner living at Hobbs Cottages, Piltdown. Emily Hall, widow of deceased said that in his younger days her husband had been a farm bailiff and shepherd but had had no occupation of late years. She last saw him alive at 2.30pm on Friday afternoon. She did not know where he went to, but he had his pension money with him.
